Something out of nothing.

What is it?

A workshop where we take waste cardboard boxes and look for what’s surprising, funny or beautiful in them. And then communicate that essence as economically as possible.

It works in two parts, making cardboard artworks individually and then putting together a zine of the work, as a team.

The workshop shown here was run with Graphic Design students at the University of Suffolk.

Finding and making ideas.

The people taking part start by looking through the cardboard I’ve brought, looking for something that sparks an idea. It might be something that’s printed on the box, its shape or the kind of shapes it can be put into.

They then figure out what they need to add or remove to make their idea sing.

In the second part of the workshop, the participants find the best way to document their creation. And we work as a team to bring them all into one zine. We divide and conquer to cover the writing, photography, sequence and design. It helps that we have to work quickly, to finish the zine by the end of the session – it gives the team a lot of energy.

In the last part of the workshop we assemble the zine; scoring, folding, stapling and trimming our way to a very satisfying conclusion.
